The kitchen is the heart of the home! It’s where you and your family come to make and enjoy food, spend time together and prepare for the day, which is probably why it gets so messy and disarranged throughout the week.
Whether you’re preparing to stage and sell your home or are just looking for ways to keep this area hassle free, we have a list of tips that will allow you to organize your kitchen for maximum efficiency. We know it may sound too good to be true, but being realtors in the Oakville/Burlington area for the past 25 years, we’ve seen a great deal of kitchens and we know what works, what doesn’t, and what can be done to easily improve this space.
Keep Only What You Need
If you’ve been in your home for a few years, odds are you’ve probably acquired some items that you don’t necessarily need, use, or want anymore. The best way to start organizing your space or preparing to stage it, is to first pull everything out and go through what you actually need and use.
Then get rid of what you don’t want and properly store away those items that only come out once or twice a year. Once you have your key kitchen essentials, then you’re ready to move onto the next step.
Separate Your Items
The best way to keep your kitchen organized is to know where everything goes. That way you’ll be more likely to put your items back in their rightful place. Take a look at your cabinets, pantry and drawers and decide where the plates, mugs, spices, and cutlery should go. Then ensure that everyone in your family knows that these items are to be put back in the same spot after they’ve been used. This will help maintain order and keep the space organized.
Get Creative with Your Storage
Shoveling cutlery or kitchen utensils into a drawer will only make it look small, cluttered and messy! To give your kitchen more space and keep it organized, get creative with storage devices. Cutlery drawer separators, lazy susans, and clean containers can all be used to not only make your space look more presentable, but it can easily allow you to see and know where everything is.
Keep Your Favourites Out in the Open
If you haven’t yet noticed, clear containers are quite trendy. Not only because they provide a minimalist, clean look and feel, but also because they allow you to easily find what you are looking for.
So, if you have some favourite pantry items that you use almost everyday, it’s worthwhile storing them in clean containers. That way you can leave them out on your countertop, knowing that they will still provide a nice look and feel, while omitting having to track them down every single day.
Install Shelves or Hooks
If the space you have in your kitchen currently isn’t enough, then it may be time to add in some more storage! Take a look at your area and see what can be done. Do you have enough space to add in some shelves? Or is it worthwhile adding some hooks to hang your oven mitts and pots and pans? This task is not only easy to complete, but it’s also affordable. Plus, if you're getting ready to sell your home, it’s a good idea to have additional storage available for the future home buyers.
The kitchen is a special place in every home and is often a huge selling point. By making your space a little more tidy, clean, and clutter free, you’ll not only enjoy using your kitchen more often, but you’ll also enjoy spending more time in there. Plus, it will be easier to prepare and stage for when it comes time to sell.
Now, if you’re ready to transform your space and make it a little more stylized, then it’s time to get to work! And as always, if you ever have any questions about home staging or updating your home to sell, be sure to download our free home sellers guide today.
